For many years now REEDEREI NSB has assumed a pioneering role in terms of environmental protection and has correspondingly implemented an environmental management system according to the ISO Standard 14001. The commitment towards the environment is a great social responsibility we have accepted. At the same time the environment with its functioning ecological system is the basis of our entrepreneurial success – today and in the future. We therefore check and revise the environmental goals annually in order to introduce and adapt standards within the company.
REEDEREI NSB has geared itself to this challenge. We therefore promote further developments and make innovative solutions available in order to pave the way for sustainable corporate success. The measures taken up to now include for example:
The objective of this process is to minimize the use of chemical auxiliary substances used to clean boiler systems. Traditionally a great deal of contaminated water which requires elaborate reprocessing is the result of this process. An alternative to chemical cleaning is manual cleaning. With the current equipment several seafarers need to clean the partially six meter deep boilers by hand. In so doing they work in a hot, dusty and cramped space.
Since neither the chemical nor the manual cleaning processes were sufficient to meet our high standards, we decided in favor of using biological equipment. Appropriate cleaning equipment was developed for the various boiler types, enabling a chemical-free cleaning of the boilers that is far less burdensome for the crew. Due to the tried and tested application on board our vessels, the aforementioned equipment was patented and can be purchased by third parties through REEDEREI NSB.
Before the fuels used on board can be used for the engine operation without any problems, they have to be processed. Special fuel separators are generally used for this purpose, with the help of which water and dirt particles are separated from the actual fuel. As a matter of principle, residues are produced in this process that are collected as oil sludge in storage tanks specially provided on board for this purpose. Since the capacity of these storage tanks is limited, the oil sludge has to be drained at certain intervals and disposed of on shore.
In order to guarantee an environmentally sound disposal of the oil sludge as well as the waste oil and bilge water quantities likewise produced during the ship operation, REEDEREI NSB works together with a number of suitable, certified waste disposal companies. This worldwide network guarantees a comprehensible, professional disposal chain. Furthermore, we commission independent surveyors who accompany the oil sludge waste disposal of our vessels. In so doing the dispensed quantities are not only ascertained but samples are also taken to investigate and document the composition of the oil sludge. Consequently, an environmentally sound waste disposal is ensured and it is transparent at any time what and how much our vessels have emitted.
With a share of 2.7% in a total of CO2 emissions (2007), international shipping is clearly below the CO2 emissions of other industries and transport branches. However, the approximately 900 tons of CO2 emitted annually constitute a considerable amount which should be reduced. The reduction of the CO2 emissions in shipping is to be achieved first and foremost by reducing fuel consumption. In order to meet the increasing requirements, REEDEREI NSB had defined the introduction of a “Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan” (SEEMP) as the most important environmental objective. Integrating it into our existing Environmental Management System ISO 14001 thereby underlines the great importance we attach to this issue.
Today each NSB vessel carries an individual SEEMP specific to the vessel, containing effective measures to increase the efficiency of our vessels. Together with the related operating instructions and processes that equally integrate operation on board and on shore, this results in a continuous monitoring and adjustment process. With its help the energy consumption of our vessels is constantly optimized and the awareness for energy efficiency further enhanced.
Beyond the SEEMPs specific to the vessels, REEDEREI NSB has also decided in favor of an additional “Company Energy Efficiency Management Plans” (CEEMP). The CEEMP prescribes global, cross-vessel measures to optimize efficiency that will ultimately benefit the entire fleet. Exemplary for these measures is the development of suitable training concepts in cooperation with the NSBacademy or also the cooperation with our charterers in special projects to increase efficiency.
With SEEMP and CEEMP, REEDEREI NSB has created effective tools with which a continuous improvement process in terms of the energy efficiency of our vessels and consequently a reduction of the emissions is managed.
With the shipping company constantly growing, acting and thinking in a sustainable way will become increasingly important since the impacts will likewise increase. However, we are convinced that consistent sustainability also poses an opportunity to sharpen our own profile and to give us the edge over our competitors. It therefore goes without saying for us to continue working on improving our environmental performance along with these exemplary measures introduced.
