REEDEREI NSB employs specialists who constantly analyze and manage the technical performance of all vessels. Established in 2006, our TOM (for Technical Operating Materials) department initially was tasked to control the quality of all fuels and lubricants which were used onboard the vessels of the fleet. Since their quality directly affects the performance and value of the vessels, the department’s responsibility to monitor soon broadened to actively cover the optimization of consumption and ultimately to install a holistic performance management structure. Therefore, TOM’s service portfolio includes the optimization of fuel and lubricant consumption as well as the reduction of vessel operating costs. With this, REEDEREI NSB expands beyond classical ship management and creates added value for its business partners.
The specifications of the fuels depend on type and design of the respective engines onboard and are determined in contracts between the shipping company and charterer. The charterer is responsible for the provision of the required fuels, decides on the exact amount of fuel which is supplied and where it is delivered to the vessel. After each provision, the fuel quality and its compliance with the quality management standards of REEDEREI NSB is analyzed in laboratory tests TOM has the important task to find a balance between preferably low procurement costs and a high reliability and technical feasibility. In addition, environmental friendliness is another aspect that needs to be considered. Through the cooperation of all parties involved we can ensure that saving potentials in the procurement of fuel and lubricants are not necessarily accompanied by high reductions in value and an excessive strain on the environment.
Development of fuel prices since early 2009
Due to the constant rise of fuel prices in the last years they sum up to a significant portion of the overall vessel operating costs. Consequently, examination and management of the employed fuels gain great importance. It is our goal to always use just the most appropriate type of fuel to generate savings and – thanks to the work of our TOM department – to pass them on to our customers.
With the ongoing administrative control of maritime traffic by national and international organizations all shipping companies are required to implement new regulations also in the area of fuels and lubricants. At REEDEREI NSB, TOM is responsible for incorporating these new standards into all internal processes and instructions. By doing so we make sure that our ship operations – especially within the field of environmental protection – always correspond with the latest requirements.
With the increasing age of the ships their performance is reduced due to various causes: Engine wear, fouling with sea organisms on the hull, shifts in the operational profile, etc. Ultimately, this reduction in performance causes higher costs for customers and the shipping company.
To identify such developments at an early stage and to initiate countermeasures it is necessary to continuously analyze the performance of all vessels. To achieve this goal, monitoring and analysis are integrated smoothly into the daily routines and are not perceived as an additional burden by the crew. By employing an online reporting platform REEDEREI NSB systematically monitors performance data such as speed, performance, revolutions and consumption. Performance management includes areas which are relevant for fuel and power analyses as well as consumption of lubricants. This way we are optimizing performance and control operating costs at the same time.
The collected database is available for all employees on shore and at sea and serves as a tool for further analysis. As a result, problems can be identified, optimizations can be developed and appropriate measures can be taken. The automated online measurements are supplemented by the established noon report in order to exclude possible discrepancies or measurement errors.
By now, the management (i.e. collection, analysis and processing) of this data constitutes the bulk of work for TOM. The department implements processes to continuously improve performance, prepares necessary measures and then supports the fleet teams during the initial implementation stages. These measures also include the retrofitting of vessels, for which TOM and our Engine Operation Department (EOD) are responsible.
With this type of performance management REEDEREI NSB makes sure that all measures are based on solid data pooling and are planned and executed actively. It allows a continuous improvement process with which REEDEREI NSB constantly bolsters its competitiveness and creates surplus value for its customers.
We already mentioned our Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and Company Energy Efficiency Management Plan (CEEMP) as part of REEDEREI NSB’s environmental objectives. These management tools were developed and implemented by TOM in cooperation with other specialist departments. The aim of SEEMP and CEEMP is to address and execute efficiency improvements within the fleet and the company and to raise awareness among all employees.
Both plans are firmly anchored in the company’s and vessels’ processes and represent modules for a continuous improvement process: They allow a structured and target-oriented approach for efficiency enhancement. Regular feedback supports the dialogue between employees on shore and at sea and creates the base for optimized vessel operations.
In contrast to the SEEMP, which is tailor-made for each vessel, our CEEMP envisions fleet- and company-wide measures which benefit the entire organization. Thanks to the interdepartmental position of TOM it is possible to collect and organize experiences that individual teams make. As a result, synergies can be exploited effectively. Examples for typical CEEMP measures are the development of appropriate training concepts together with the NSBacademy or the centrally coordinated collaboration with our charterers on specific efficiency enhancement projects. Generally, the CEEMP checks all processes within REEDEREI NSB for optimization opportunities.
In combination with the Engine Operation Department, which we portrait on this page, TOM makes an important contribution to our aim which is to enable our fleet to perform on a high level and to install a continuous improvement process in our operations. New projects of these departments will regularly be presented on this site.
